Stage 59 · Premium
Futures

Months, the Curve and the Roll

One futures market is a row of prices, one for every month, and they don't agree. This stage teaches you to hold one market across its months. You'll read the curve, price the roll, and find out why the level on your chart was never traded by anybody. Eleven lessons, and the last one grades your roll on the day and the cost.

Stage 59 of the TradeWize futures track: one market with a price for every month. Contango and backwardation, cost of carry, basis and convergence, the roll and what it costs, the continuous chart, and calendar spreads.

  • A futures market is a row of prices, one per month, and I know which one I hold.
  • Basis is futures minus spot, and it goes to zero on the expiry date whether I like it or not.
  • I roll before the last trading day, on the day the volume moves, not the day the calendar says.
  • Holding through a roll has a price, and I compute it before I hold.
  • A level on a back-adjusted chart is a shape, not a price anyone traded.
