What Moves a Currency

Every currency pays a rate to whoever holds it, and a pair is two of those rates in one price. This stage teaches you what moves one. You'll read a rate board and a calendar row, and you'll know which currency moves, which way, and what holding the higher rate pays you and risks. Eleven lessons, and the last one hands you a whole week of releases.

Stage 66 of the TradeWize forex track: the drivers, read off a rate board and a calendar row. Eight central banks, the surprise in a release, the carry trade, risk on and risk off, the dollar index, pegs and floors, and political shocks.

  • A currency pair is two interest rates, and the differential is what I am paid or charged to hold it.
  • I read previous, consensus and actual, and the surprise is what moves the pair.
  • I do not hold a stop inside the spread on a release, and I wait for the second move.
  • Carry pays me the differential and charges me the move, and I compute the move that wipes a year of it.
  • A peg holds until the reserves run out, and I never short the central bank at the line.
