When Crypto Moves: Weekends, Hours and the US Open
Crypto never closes. It still keeps hours, and they're New York's.
By Pavel Penev, MScFounder, TradeWize · 10+ years trading the marketsThe short answer
Crypto trades 24/7, but most of the movement now happens while the US stock market is open. Since 2022 the half-hour after the 9:30am New York open has been bitcoin's busiest, at 1.9x the average weekday half-hour. US stock-market hours are 27% of a weekday's clock and now carry 36% of its movement. Weekends are the quiet part: a weekend day moves about 55% as much as a weekday, and Saturday is the quietest day of the week.
Crypto has no opening bell and no closing bell. You can buy bitcoin at 3am on a Sunday, and people say that's what makes it different.
But being open all the time isn't the same as moving all the time. So we took every half-hour of bitcoin and ether on Binance from 2018 to 2026, about 153,000 bars each, and measured how much the price moved in each one. Then we lined them up by the clock.
Finding 1: the US open is the busiest half-hour
The US stock market opens at 9:30am New York time. Since 2022, bitcoin has moved more in the half-hour after that than in any other half-hour of a weekday. The average move then is 0.50%, against 0.26% for an average half-hour.
Bitcoin's average move in each half-hour of a weekday, against that era's average half-hour.
It wasn't always like this. In 2019 the 9:30am half-hour ranked 26th of 48, a perfectly ordinary half-hour. In 2018-2021 the busiest was 11am, at only 1.2x the average. The day was flatter.
Here's the part people miss. The open itself didn't get much wilder: 0.46% a half-hour in 2018-2021, 0.50% since. The rest of the day got calmer. So the open now stands out: 2.1x the average half-hour in 2024-2026, and 2.3x this year.
One more time slot matters. At 8:30am New York the US government publishes its big numbers, like inflation and jobs. In 2022, when every inflation report moved markets, the 8:30am half-hour ran at 1.6x the average, nearly as busy as the open. It has calmed since, but it's still above average.
Finding 2: crypto has moved onto US hours
US stock-market hours, 9:30am to 4pm New York, are 27% of a weekday's clock. From 2018 to 2021 they carried 28% of bitcoin's weekday movement. That's about their fair share: bitcoin didn't care much what time it was in New York.
In 2022 that changed. Since then, US hours have carried 36% of the movement, and 40% of the weekday volume this year. The biggest moves lean even harder. Of the biggest 1% of bitcoin's half-hours since 2022, 45% landed in US stock-market hours. On a weekly clock those hours are only 19% of the time.
US stock-market hours' share of bitcoin's weekday movement, and the weekend's share of the week's volume. Dashed lines are each one's share of the clock.
The data doesn't say why, but the timing lines up with a few things. In 2022 bitcoin started trading like a tech stock as interest rates rose. More US funds and trading firms started trading it, and they work US hours. And since January 2024, the US spot bitcoin ETFs have traded during US stock-market hours.
Ether shows the same shift. Its US-hours share went from 29% to 35%, and its 9:30am half-hour ran at 1.9x the average in 2024-2026.

Since 2022, bitcoin has moved 1.9% to 2.3% on an average weekday, from open to close. Saturday has moved 0.8%. That's 35% of a Monday. Sunday sits in between at 1.5%.
Bitcoin's average daily move by day of the week, UTC days, 2018-2021 against 2022-2026.
Weekends were always quieter, but the gap has grown. From 2018 to 2021 a weekend day moved 70% as much as a weekday. Since 2022 it's been 55%. The weekend's share of volume fell from 23% to 18%, when two days out of seven would be 29%.
Big moves on a weekend have become rare too. Since 2022, 9% of bitcoin's biggest 1% of half-hours came on a Saturday or Sunday, against 19% in 2018-2021. For ether it's 15%, down from 19%.
| 2018-2021 | 2022-2026 | Share of the clock | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biggest 1% of half-hours, at least | 2.4% | 1.5% | |
| In US stock-market hours | 25% | 45% | 19% |
| On a Saturday or Sunday | 19% | 9% | 29% |
Bitcoin on Binance, 30-minute bars. 699 half-hours in the first era and 831 in the second. US hours are 9:30am to 4pm New York, Monday to Friday.
Finding 4: the weekend ends at 6pm Sunday, New York
The weekend doesn't stay quiet all the way to Monday. Through Saturday, no three-hour block of bitcoin gets above 63% of an average weekday half-hour. Then from 6pm to 9pm on Sunday, New York time, it runs at 1.2x the weekday average.
That's when US stock futures reopen for the week and Asia's Monday morning begins. Ether does the same, at 1.3x. If something happened over the weekend, Sunday evening in New York is usually when the price reacts to it.
What people assume
Crypto never closes, so every hour is the same.
- It trades 24/7, so it moves 24/7.
- Weekends are just two more trading days.
- The US stock market has nothing to do with it.
What the data says
Crypto keeps New York's hours now.
- The 9:30am New York half-hour moves 1.9x the average.
- US hours carry 36% of the weekday movement.
- A Saturday moves 35% as much as a Monday.
How to read it
- Expect the most movement from 9:30am to 11am New York time. If you trade short-term, that's when your stop is most likely to get hit and your target most likely to get reached.
- Check the calendar for 8:30am New York. On days the US publishes inflation or jobs numbers, the half-hour before the open can move nearly as much as the open.
- Don't read a quiet Saturday as a signal. A weekend day now moves about 55% as much as a weekday, so a flat weekend is normal, not a sign that something is building.
- Treat Sunday evening in New York as the start of the week. That's when weekend news usually gets priced in.
- Remember the quiet hours are also the thin ones. Late evening in New York is the quietest part of the day, at 0.7x the average, and fewer people trading means an order moves the price more.
What time of day is bitcoin most volatile?
Since 2022, the half-hour after the US stock market opens, 9:30am to 10am New York time. Bitcoin moves 1.9x the average weekday half-hour then. The quietest is 11:30pm New York, at 0.7x.
Is crypto less volatile on weekends?
Yes. Since 2022, a weekend day has moved 55% as much as a weekday, and Saturday is the quietest day of the week. Only 9% of bitcoin's biggest half-hours came on a weekend, though weekends are 29% of the week.
Why does the US stock market open move bitcoin?
The data shows when, not why. But since 2022 bitcoin has traded more like a tech stock, big US firms trade it during their working day, and the US spot bitcoin ETFs only trade while the stock market is open.
Has crypto always followed US market hours?
No. From 2018 to 2021, US stock-market hours carried 28% of bitcoin's weekday movement, about their 27% share of the clock. The shift came in 2022, and it's held every year since.
When does the crypto weekend end?
Around 6pm Sunday, New York time. That's when US stock futures reopen and Asia's Monday starts. From 6pm to 9pm, bitcoin moves 1.2x the average weekday half-hour.
What time zone should I use to read crypto charts?
Daily candles on most exchanges close at midnight UTC. But for when the price moves, New York time is the clock to watch, because that's when the US stock market and the US data releases happen.
Method, and what this cannot tell you
We took every 30-minute bar of bitcoin and ether on Binance (BTCUSDT and ETHUSDT spot) from 1 January 2018 to 27 September 2026. For each half-hour we measured how far the price moved from open to close, up or down, and the dollar volume traded. We grouped the half-hours by New York time, Monday to Friday, because that's the clock the US stock market runs on. We grouped days by the UTC calendar, the one crypto exchanges use, to compare weekdays with the weekend. Then we split the sample into 2018-2021 and 2022-2026 and checked every result year by year and on ether.
- This is one exchange. Binance is the biggest, but a US exchange like Coinbase may lean further toward US hours, and its weekend share may differ.
- A half-hour's move is its open-to-close change. A bar that spikes and comes back counts as small. Moves inside the bar, and the wicks, aren't counted.
- Binance's bars have 28 gaps, mostly maintenance windows of an hour or two in 2018-2021. No bar spans a gap, so they drop out rather than showing up as fake moves.
- The split at 2022 is by calendar year. The year-by-year chart is there so you can see the change isn't an artifact of where the line falls. It holds on ether too.
- Averages are pulled up by crash days. March 2020 alone holds several of the biggest half-hours. That's why we also count how often the biggest 1% of half-hours land in each part of the week.
- This measures when the price moves, not which way. Nothing here says a time of day is more likely to go up or down.
