What is European-style option?

A European-style option can only be exercised at expiry. An American-style option can be exercised on any trading day before then.

The name has nothing to do with where it trades. It's about when the owner can use it. With a European-style option, nobody can exercise early, so if you've sold one you can't be assigned before expiry.

Index options such as SPX and XSP are European-style and settle in cash. Options on stocks and ETFs, SPY included, are American-style and settle in shares.

For example

If you sell a SPY call that's in the money, the buyer can exercise it the day before SPY goes ex-dividend to collect the payout. You can't be assigned early on an SPX or XSP call.

Why it matters to you

Early assignment can leave you holding, or short, 100 shares you didn't plan for. European-style options remove that risk, which matters most when you sell options.

⚠ Thinking you can't close a European option early

You can sell a European-style option any time the market is open. You just can't exercise it before expiry.
